Coach Butler to be honored at Summer Jam

Coach Butler to be honored at Summer Jam | The Daily News | Bogalusa, LA

Organizers for Bogalusa Summer Jam III have said they want to join in the community-wide efforts to Build a Better Bogalusa by offering a positive, family-friendly event. As part of that project, during the Summer Jam on Saturday they will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to a man they consider a role model, Eugene Butler.

“Mr. Butler was the head baseball coach and an assistant football coach at Central Memorial High School during the ’60s until full integration when he took over as the head football coach at the Bogalusa Junior High School in the fall of 1969,” Thomas Kates said. “In addition, he was a civics teacher at Central Memorial High School and a physical education teacher at Bogalusa Junior High School.”

Butler has two championships, the Louisiana State Baseball Championship in 1967 and later a Louisiana State Junior High School Championship in football, to his credit.

But his influence reached beyond sports. When Butler arrived at BJHS he arranged for students to vote on a new team mascot to represent the changing times, and the team went from being the Rebels to the Timberjacks, Kates said.

“Also, he was an outstanding husband, citizen and long-term resident of Bogalusa, and we want to present him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to our community,” he added.

The presentation will take place between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. during Summer Jam III at Bennie’s Amphitheater on Martin Luther King Drive Saturday.

For additional information, call Kates at 750-8061.

Instructional: 10th Annual Legends All-Pro Football Camp held

Instructional|10th Annual Legends All-Pro Football Camp held | The Daily News | Bogalusa, LA

There was plenty of passing, catching and running going on at the 10th Annual Legends All-Pro Football Camp on Thursday at Lewis V. Murray Jr. Stadium.

But the focus was more dedicated to giving back.

“Bogalusa will always be home to me and I want to help these kids as much as possible because I want them to have the same chance I had,” director Bruce Plummer said. “As long as they put forth the effort, they have an opportunity not just in football but in life.

“It is an instructional camp and as long as I am on this earth, there is always going to be a camp. There is no other camp like this around here and we appreciate the passion that the kids have for football.”

Plummer, a native of Bogalusa and product of Mississippi State who played in Super Bowl XXII with the Denver Broncos, got plenty of help from a plethora of coaches that included former NFL players from Bogalusa, Robert Smith and Sean Smith.

Other coaches included Bogalusa’s Craig Jones, Michael Cummings, Adrian Frazier and James “Speedy” Butler, Varnado’s Donald Frazier and former Bogalusa quarterbacks who played collegiately, Kenneth McSwain, Greg Greely, Brad Brown and Greg Dillon.

“They are all in and they show up,” Plummer said. “I try to do things to let them know that I appreciate them and they are really thankful for that.”

The crew ran an all-day camp that included six stations based on the fundamentals of football. A barbeque is hosted at the home of Plummer’s sister, Debra Plummer, the night before the camp.

“Some of the kids have never played football before and are like deer in headlights but they get a hold of it after a while,” Plummer said.

The camp initially began in the 1980’s before returning a decade ago. Made possible today through grants from the NFL, the camp celebrated its decennial this year.

“You have to have a dream, drive and determination but the first thing we tell the kids is about the importance of education,” Plummer said. “I don’t care what you do in life, that can’t be taken away.”

After re-enrolling, Plummer received a bachelor of science in Interdisciplinary Studies this past December in Starkville, fulfilling a promise to his late mother Frances Plummer.

Other coaches included Ricky Brumfield, Allen Plummer, Earin Bridges, Zaid Houston, Ricardo Washington, Stanley Pigott and Jon Carter.
