Concerned Citizens group announces MLK celebration and parade

Bro. Odell Nichols, president of Concerned Citizens, has announced the eighth annual Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration and Parade to be held Saturday, Jan. 19.

Scheduled to begin at noon at Varnado Elementary School, it will parade to Varnado High School, where there will be a program, refreshments and activities for all ages.

Nichols asks that churches and other organizations provide two entries in the parade at a cost of $50 per entry. Individuals may also place entries at $25 per entry. Each entity is responsible for its own throws. All entry fees are to be paid by Wednesday, Jan. 16.

On parade day, participants are to be at Varnado Elementary School by 11 a.m., and lined up and ready to begin the parade by noon.

In addition to the young people participating in the parade, Nichols asks that each church select at least one youth to participate in the program with a song, poem or reading in honor and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Concerned Citizens ask for your participation in this annual celebration promoting African-American heritage that keeps King’s dream alive. For any additional information, contact Nichols at 986-3746 or Bro. Levi Lewis, MLK parade/program chairman, at 735-5890.

LSU braces for SEC Media Days

LSU braces for SEC Media Days | The Daily News | Bogalusa, LA

BATON ROUGE (AP) – Quarterback Zach Mettenberger may be the first LSU player in history to be taken to the Southeastern Conference Media Days bonanza of news conferences who has never started a game for the Tigers.

But Mettenberger, a Messiah of sorts for a program lacking solid quarterbacks since 2007, will be in Hoover, Ala., Wednesday to showcase his spoken word to more than 1,000 media members from around the country.

The 28th annual SEC Media Days began Tuesday at the Wynfrey Hotel just outside Birmingham with an address by league commissioner Mike Slive, who is expected to touch on the new four-team playoff set to start in the 2013-14 season.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier will began the parade of coaches’ and players’ press conferences that will last until Thursday.

New members Texas A&M and Missouri followed before Vanderbilt closed day one.

On Wednesday, an SEC Media Days record six teams will take the stage as the league now has 14 teams, but the league kept the same number of days for the event at three.

Florida kicks off Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., followed by Mississippi State, Arkansas, Kentucky, Auburn and finally LSU at about 5 p.m.

LSU coach Les Miles will be accompanied by sophomore wide receiver Odell Beckham, who started nine games last season, junior free safety Eric Reid, who has started 16 games in his career, and Mettenberger.

Who is your hero?

The theme for the American Legion Magic City Post 24 Fourth of July parade this year is “Saluting Our Local Heroes,” and some of those who fit the bill will ride in the parade for all to see.

But there certainly won’t be room for all of them, and The Daily News wants to help make sure those who don’t make the trip through town are also acknowledged.

Let us know whom you consider a local hero in 100 words or less and we will publish their names and your reasons for their selection on Wednesday. To be included submissions must be received by 3 p.m. Monday, July 2.

They can be dropped off at the office, 525 Ave. V, or emailed to marcelleh@bellsouth.net.
