Bogalusa rebounds, beats Albany, 72-68

The Bogalusa Lumberjacks (13-6, 3-1) came onto the court on Tuesday looking to bounce back from their first district loss of the season. In a game that was close from start to finish they did just that, defeating the Albany Hornets (12-12, 1-3), 72-68.

Critical to the victory for the Jacks was their inside size advantage as well as their depth, as a total of five players coming off the bench scored a combined 35 points on the night.

Junior Ladamion Keys was big for the Lumberjacks in the first quarter, scoring eight of the team’s 10 points. Albany played well in the opening period, matching Bogalusa shot for shot, and at the end of the quarter the score was tied, 10-10.

In the second Bogalusa was able to open up a bit of a lead, outscoring the Hornets 22-15 for the quarter to go in at halftime leading 32-25.

After a quiet first half Bogalusa senior Brian Williams got his offense going in the third quarter, scoring eight of his 10 total points. The lead for the Jacks grew to 11, 48-37, heading into the fourth.

In the final period Albany started to heat up from the outside and cut into the Lumberjack lead. The Hornets knocked down a total of five 3-pointers in the fourth and found themselves within two points on a couple of occasions.

Senior Matt Melton made some key plays in the quarter to help Bogalusa hold onto the lead. Coming off the bench, Melton scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter, which included draining five of five free throw attempts. The offensive boost was enough to carry the Jacks to the 72-68 victory.

Keys led the Lumberjacks with 20 points on the night. Also scoring for Bogalusa were Chris Rivera with 11, Rodney Crumedy and Donel Magee with five apiece, Chris Lowery with four and Cordero Brown and Trey Thomas with two apiece.

Renovations to take place at Franklinton ballparks

Renovations to take place at Franklinton ballparks | The Daily News | Bogalusa, LA

Years of use by countless little league teams have left the ball fields located behind Franklinton City Hall a bit rundown, but those facilities will be seeing some upgrades this season, according to Mayor Wayne Fleming.

“They’re very nice fields. They just need some attention,” he said.

Fleming said renovations at the several ballparks maintained by the town will be an ongoing process. The first phase of the project will be to replace the fencing. Since the town has taken bids and selected a contractor, that work is set to begin as soon as the rainy weather relents and the fields dry up, he said.

“The fences that we’ll be putting up will give us better protection, so we can keep things better under lock and key,” Fleming said.

The next step will be work on the restroom facilities, where renovations are much needed, Fleming said. That work will begin closer to the summer, but he said it all will be complete before the start of baseball and softball season.

The fencing should be about a $20,000 project, and the cost of the bathroom renovations will be around $9,000 to $11,000, Fleming said. The work is being funded through the town’s one-cent sales tax, where 5 percent of revenue collected is dedicated to recreation, he said.

Renovations to the seating areas at the ballparks will be the town’s focus for next season, Fleming said.

“Next year, we’re going to take a look at spending some money and redoing the stands up there,” he said.

Franklinton girls beat Hammond to open district play | The Daily News | Bogalusa, LA

The Franklinton Lady Demons improved to 18-1 on the season and 1-0 in District 7-4A Tuesday with a 78-37 win over Hammond.

Franklinton continued district play Friday night in Pearl River.

The Lady Demons led 17-6 after the first quarter of play Tuesday, then led Hammond 39-16 at the half.

Coach Regina Meyerchick said Hammond hustled in the game but had trouble scoring against her team. And despite her team’s easy win, she said the Lady Demons still have corrections to make.

“We’re a work in progress,” she said. “We get out of position a lot. But we are very blessed to be extremely quick. We can make mistakes but we make up for them.

“As we learn not to make the mistakes, we still have our quickness.”

Nine players scored in the game for Franklinton. Hailey Sellers led with 28 points, while Ashley Varnado had 14 and Cheyenne Fornea had 13. Tyeishia Anders scored seven, Kierra Williams had six, Amber Carter contributed four and Shakerian Fabre, Jacaria Bickham and Denetra Rayford had two points each.

Last weekend the Lady Demons played three games in the St. Martin’s Episcopal Tournament. Franklinton defeated Haynes Academy, 65-29, Ben Franklin, 56-23, and St. Charles Catholic, 57-33.

Hailey Sellers had 22 points against Haynes Academy, while Lana Thomas had 10, Varnado had eight and Fornea had seven. Thomas hit three of her team’s 10 3-pointers in the game.

Fornea led scoring for Franklinton against Ben Franklin with 12 points. In the game, 11 of the Lady Demons’ 12 players scored.

Sellers was leading scorer against St. Charles with 14 points. Fornea had 12, and Williams had 10.

Lakeshore JV gets easy win over Jacks

The junior varsity Lumberjacks suffered their worst loss of the season Thursday against the JV squad from Lakeshore High School, falling by a final score of 51-28.

Bogalusa JV head coach Landon Tims summed up the reasons for the loss, saying, “We just played bad, real bad. Their full court pressure bothered us, and the fact we couldn’t make free throws or finish at the basket didn’t help either.”

After Lakeshore’s JV built a 16-7 lead in the first quarter, the JV Jacks came back in the second and cut the lead to one, 16-15, before committing three consecutive turnovers that turned into layups by their opponent. Lakeshore led 25-15 at the half.

Turnovers continued to hamper the JV Jacks in the second half as Lakeshore coasted to the 51-28 win. Bogalusa finished the game three of 12 (25 percent) from the free throw line, making that an obvious area for improvement.

“We will continue to work hard in practice to get better and to be ready for our game Tuesday against Varnado,” said Tims.

Jakeithen Graves and Lorenzo James led the JV Jacks with seven points each. Kenny Robertson scored four, Tre Short scored three, Rashad Burnette, Cedric Porter and Tyran Holliway each scored two and Demetri Baham scored one.
